The Ar \\k proves t !o be a:n elabor?-ate @;ho)ax`, c`,areful =ly desi*-`gned t)@-o @=give hope .$ to the ma[lnourish /$ed and desp[@e/$*rat :e _d $\eni,zens  .of the ?#bunker, w #hi -le in th]e ] meantime -]the dome that (se]pa]rates @the ir mi:[s%  erab?@le !#!exi ;stence from the nuclear#^, winter outsi)@d:%e !- is slow! ly cavin*g in.  #-What fi$*rst striked me about_? the movie i *?s ,(\-the desi/gn \%of the bunker and the depicti \on`# of the %- survivors. T$he survivor:,``s[\ are ] gau)nt, filthy a)+n,=.d terri #-ble-l!@ook-ing penitents, dressed in rags a nd! ai/mlessly wa, n dering the neon-li/?t h$alls of th),e bu.+nker like a./utomatons. The bunker is a rundown, see(dy place, w%ith bright neon _:,li_ghts pee#]ring from al^@-l s% $ides like ] the\ ey___@es of mali .gnan(])t_ beast;*!s. $, On one ha#nd it is a slightly 80+%`'s$! depiction of the: d.`yst\opian futu+/re but t/!he movie never stoop#\;s dow=/[/n to MAD _ +/]MAX cheese. Instea:=\d it combines bi[ti/ng p$olitic_al satire with t:he bleak o\^utlook of? a world with. no future[#:, black com $*edy w+i`th bar@bs /:,on apathy, religi^on and pow er,@ . The*[ surviv:`_ors, -for exampl^#e, are )@f`*ed some )!ki nd o+f [\flour drop_+ping from a tub,e that hove@%rs in the air@$ - lat$ er on we disc(%over the fo o*?d super[]visor uses\ books and the Bible it[self a+s fill\e.r fo!^=r this me`ag`re meal. %)!Th^^ere are ma+_n/+y %such short symbolic touches, perha=)(ps :+not \@@life-changi,*\ng _%or(` faith-resto%ring, yet #]p#layfu,#%#l. , clever and i\ ns:$p\:ir ;*e%/d.  One thing is for`` sure$(; O=%-BI, O-B)A i.!s n!# ot your run-of -the-mill s*ci-fi schlo()+=c]k. I(= [t overcomes its^ modest budget with crea_-)tivity and,/ \%h@/as! ge+nuine arti_`,stic :.as[pirat]*ions \%+both from a wr:[iting and direct+#;ing p.?,e$rsp)ective. My opin .i/;@on is that i*!t shou,:ld have#+ been filmed  i) *n black and whit,e instead ^o +-f colour though. The director uses ;@atmos!([pheric light and s[/ hadow%# .to great effect and it would have registe-[red even bet%ter]+ ] in stark black and white*. The bl=]ue-green @!neon [ )% o:/n the other.] h[and outst+ays its welc`;%\ome after a while. Ju .st a m+=)inor gripe in an otherwis/(e solid b-movie w\ ith its h#%.e)[art s-[et in all the `)r:ight places=^.  Imagine; a less bleak THE ROAD (Corma^#c McCarthy) bei] ng in.jected with the satire an d hum* our of DR.STRANGELOVE and you'r@?e#?: ge @^ tting t:]here. S,`ee it if you can fi]nd it.
